I had never actually even checked bluesky before. No particular hatred but I just don’t need another network. Just clicked the first link today.
But seriously how you click on a bsky post link on the web and in two clicks you are offered account creation with just an email and password is so simple & perfect.
The Fediverse really needs to learn how to make it look as simple (even if in the back it’s more complicated).

Sign up in Mastodon 's official app on mobile is pretty much just a form now. The only difference is the "pick another server" button. It received a lot of backlash for "promoting a single server", though.

@jedi I clicked for example on a post from mastodon.online (private browsing to appear as a new user).
And this is the mess I faced. The third page is the worst. Too much text, no way people clicking “next next” will get there without help.

@santiago I'm not saying it doesn't need to be better. Just that, for some time now, they are aware of the onboarding problems and are experimenting with it.

@jedi Sure if I go directly to the instance I want to create a new account on (because someone told me where) it’ll be easier. But the most common experience on the web is reaching a post in the browser and from there wanting to follow someone.
Let’s say it’s no wonder there are so many techies around here. Either that or people who know techies who took them by the hand.

@santiago it must be because the server is closed for registration. Then it is a complex problem to tackle. To which server send the users who want to sign up? Bsky is pretty much a centralized service, so it makes sense just to sign up in bsky.social / bsky.app.

@jedi True ! It’s much better. But is is a special build they are running ? I tried on bolha.one which I believe runs the latest mastodon server version (and also closed for registrations) and I got the same process as on mastodon.online ending up on joinmastodon.org which is the place I am sure most newcomers get lost forever.

For me, the official page should be the same as the initial screen of the app "join mastodon.social (or pick another open server)"

@jedi Here I’d say the worst part is joinmastodon.org appears the same if you come from Google as when you come directly from a post on some instance after having already clicked “join” already 3 pages ago.
I had to scroll down 3 screens explanations and filters before I found a join buttons (again!) and it defaulted to English for me — yet my phone is in French, as bsky immediately knew from the headers. The number of hurdles is high 😅

@jedi Yeah you can’t escape choosing an instance but definitely joinmastodon.org should have a different page when user already clicked join on another site. Explaining it all over again feels like you mistakenly ended on the wrong page.
Ideally instance owners should be able to recommend a list of friendly instances for registration and the page on source instance should directly show which ones are open.
