      @kagan

      I use a spotter for anything above 405 lbs. There are two risks:

      1) Something catastrophic could happen.😬

      2) I might overestimate my strength, and think that I can do 8, when I can only do 7.

      The risk of something catastrophic happening is much higher at lower rep ranges and heavier weights. The other risk is smaller. I have a pretty good gauge of how many I can do. I train using "Rate of Perceived Exertion," a scale of 1 to 10. RPE 10 means "I could not have lifted this one more time!" RPE 9 means "I think I could have done one more rep!" RPE 8 means "I think I could have done two more reps!" Etc. And I have safety bars, and I practice bailing every time I'm in the gym.

      And research has shown that there is not much difference between training to RPE 7, 8, or 9, and training to absolute failure. So I usually stay around 7 or 8.

      The only advantage of training to failure, is that sometimes beginner and intermediate lifters are unaware of their max reps, especially as they are rapidly getting stronger. So they'll do 12 reps and rate it as RPE 9. But then a trainer will say "Ok. Let's do one more set, this time to absolute failure. Don't rack it at 12. Just lift it as many as you can, and I will spot you! I will keep you safe!" And then the client will do 16 reps. So 12 was really RPE 4, not RPE 9.

      @mekkaokereke Holy crap, nice!

      I stated off thinking, "Wait, you're doing this with no spotter? 🤨" But damn, you really didn't need one! 🫡
