   For a while, in the 2000s, spammers were sending emails with inline animated gifs that looked like CAPTCHAs trying to sell black market viagra.

   I swear I am not making this up.

     This was the cumulation of a series of escalations.

     First there was spam.
     Then keyword filters.
     Then creative misspelling.
     Then regular expression filters.
     Then spintax.
     Then fuzzy hash filters.
     Then HTML crimes.
     Then structural filters.
     Then images of text.
     Then OCR filters.
     Then viagra CAPTCHAs.
