Longtime S.F. resident makes surprise bequest: $3.6 million for park benches

Longtime San Francisco resident Ben Bobo liked to walk his golden retriever, Chad, in Alta Plaza Park near his home in Pacific Heights — so he decided that it would be a friendly gesture to leave a portion of his estate to pay for some new city park benches. After Bobo’s death in 2023, that portion turned out to be $3.6 million — a huge windfall that astonished city parks officials and local residents, and probably would have surprised even Bobo himself, according to his estate’s executor. In fact, the sum would pay for far more benches than the park system can use. So the Recreation and Parks Commission will vote Thursday on a plan to install 81 new park benches citywide, at the cost of $700,000, with the rest of the bequest going to capital improvements and general maintenance in the park system.
