The pervasive political illiteracy in the software world runs so deep that people can say things like this with a straight face, expect to be taken seriously, and sometimes _are_ taken seriously.
I have an alternative view: that this is 100% victim blaming, a totally unacceptable worldview for a responsible engineer to hold, and a screaming red no-hire flag.

@mhoye At my workplace, we build complex industrial systems with high safety requirements (aka trains).
To meet these requirements, we use lots and lots of processes and tooling. None of it involves individual developers examining dependencies.
That guy is not a serious person.

This is definitely how it works in other fields, right? I remember getting my drivers license, and how difficult it was to demonstrate a mastery of not just metallurgy, electrical engineering, urban planning and petroleum chemistry, but also parallel parking. I still remember how impressive it was when everyone was making sourdough at the start of the pandemic - where are you all finding time to learn soil management, combine harvester maintenance and global shipping logistics?

Anyway, our junior engineer edgelord friend here did not read every line of SQLite, MySQL or Postgres before choosing a backing store. I’ll even bet you a dollar they just gave AWS a CC number while saying “actually obviously scale”.
My experience - and this may not be yours but it’s definitely mine - is that the way people who say stuff like this actually make technical decisions is by puffing out their chests like a pigeon and repeating some shit they saw in a hackernews comment last week.
