Somebody has lost €830,000 after sending the money to Brad Pitt on social media, after ‘he’ posted that he was ill with these photos.

@gsuberland the funniest bit is the press reporting - “Anne was sent a number of AI-generated images of the Hollywood star to persuade her”
@GossiTheDog I think I could genuinely do a better job in mspaint
@GossiTheDog lmao, that's an embarrassingly poor photoshop job
@GossiTheDog youtubers have been saying "don't make fun of people getting scammed because it's embarrassing to fall for it and degrading them will make them want to suffer in silence"
9 times out of 10 I have a hard time not laughing at the ridiculous things they fall for though
@CwalkPinoy I mean, it’s a valid point (and I hate the term pig butchering). But also, media outlets shouldn’t call this stuff AI.
Definitely help educate any vulnerable family in your life not to send any money to strangers, and that they should meet family members before giving them money.
Every online community is infested with this stuff.
That includes Mastodon, I had to block signups from the entire country of Nigeria on Cyberplace as unfortunately 99% of signups were romance scams - the profiles all follow the same format and operate in DMs.
Also, the cybersecurity industry should really really stop calling the victims of this stuff pig butchering. It’d be like doctors calling their patients coffin dodgers.
People fall for scams. It’s also why y’all have jobs.
BBC News are running the "AI Brad Pitt" story as a frontpage headline. None of the pictures are generated by AI.
