    The Web could only grow because it was based on two complimenary standards — HTML for the documents and HTTP for the transport (that grew into a monster over many years, but that is a different story).

    In social networking we now see one truly open approach (ActivityPub) and a bunch of proprietary protocols with BlueSky's ATPROTO being the most pushed one, with a new $30M boost from people that, IMHO, care more about owning than about sharing. Guess which standard I prefer ;)

      @jwildeboer I obviously share your preference, but I think the #FreeOurFeeds group is working to make AT Proto more open, equitable, and participative. I think making things more open is always good.

      @evan Yes, agreed. But the fact that it needs such a push to be more open tells a story in itself. I applaud the effort, but I prefer a world where such (IMHO) waste of resources wouldn't be needed.

      @makeratschool @jwildeboer Do you mean, why are the FOF folks starting their new project? I think they're worried that Bluesky is a VC-funded startup that could be acquired at any moment.

      @evan
      But there is no reason to do it that was. There is an open protocol for decenzralized networks. Equitable and participative. Maybe with some flaws, but the basic work is done, proof of concept more than successfull. Let's throw 30Mio bucks on this. So the question should be WHY?

      @makeratschool @jwildeboer to the people who started that project? I think they are mostly Bluesky users and developers, so that's their primary interest.

      For the Fediverse? I think we have >100 ActivityPub implementations, mostly Open Source, that run for tens of thousands of independent communities, with commodity servers and a permissionless networking standard. I think it's a lot harder to hijack that network.

      @evan
      That doesn't answer my question: Why is it important to get Bluesky billionaire proof and Mastodon not?

      @makeratschool @jwildeboer if you'd like to convince the FOF people to spend money on ActivityPub, you will definitely not get any objections from me!
