"More than 900 incarcerated people are among the more than 7,500 personnel helping fight the historic, and destructive, Southern California wildfires...This is not a new practice. California has relied on incarcerated firefighters since 1915. And prison labor has been used to respond to emergencies and disasters nationwide for centuries, said Bianca Tylek, executive director of Worth Rises, a criminal justice advocacy organization."

Inmates are fighting California wildfires in long-running and controversial practice
California has turned to incarcerated firefighters since 1915. To those opposed to the use of inmates as firefighters, the system is seen as exploitative.

@Tonydunc @nicholasr @bicmay yeah, it's slave labor by another name. Nothing "voluntary" is truly voluntary when you're incarcerated.

Do they have better outcomes? Sure. But which is the cause and which is the effect? We need to end the prison-industrial system.

@nicholasr @bicmay I would be shocked if they are paid the same wages! $5-10/day https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3rwdjwglx2o

Hundreds of California prison inmates fight wildfires - and stigma
Critics say using incarcerated men and women to fight fires is cheap labour, but supporters say it is rehabilitative.

@bicmay as long as it is voluntary and they are paid the same wages, I don't have an issue with this. This could even be beneficial
