@WarnerCrocker This worries me because I no longer have trust in people.
Traitors ran and got elected as Democrats, only to change to the GQP party as soon as they were installed
Evil people intent on hurting children or minorities worked their way onto school boards and election boards
I will take the devil I know every time now. And Rochko has the principles that Mastodon users agree with. He may come to regret having to answer to a group of people with disparate motives
@3x10to8mps Not making light of your concerns by saying this. Our digital/tech/socialmedia worlds are changing as much, and just as fast, as our political ones. I reconcile myself with reminders that while this pace is quicker than most I've seen, it is the way of the damn world and there's not much I can do about except remaining skeptical, because for longer than I can remember I learned to be wary of any trust I may feel like bestowing.
@WarnerCrocker Ah so I'm late coming to the 'skeptical as first reflex'. My nature and strength is to be guileless and trust my intuition about people. But that's in person
Parsing who's worthy of trust in the public sphere is harder. I feel shock deeply when public trust is betrayed. It's been a very hard decade+. Mastodon has been a refuge I don't want to change
I don't want to lose my openness and become embittered, cynical. But the fight that's coming may require that armor. I grieve :-(
@3x10to8mps Call me crazy, but I've never acquainted being skeptical with being cynical. I've certainly been accused of the latter. Being skeptical to me leaves the potential to embrace or welcome, once I've had the opportunity to evaluate.
For most of my life I've been in the casting/hiring for the theatre biz. It takes experience and some skill to suss out what's genuine and what's not when it comes to people, institutions, etc... /more
@3x10to8mps Parallel to that, I've also worked in marketing and PR and know first hand that you can create any story and have some effect on the outcome.
That's not to say all outcomes are bad, but it has taught me to stay skeptical. Even the well intentioned can change colors when threats arrive or desires are thwarted.
