etsy especially theres a huge alibaba reseller problem -

Phantasm (phnt@fluffytail.org)'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2025 03:52:05 JST Phantasm @sun @mischievoustomato @icedquinn @RustyCrab That's sadly nothing new outside of very mainstream searches and websites. You deviate slightly and you are bombarded with a bunch of fake download buttons, "security" popups and outright malware links. A good example is the Crystal Dew World (crystaldisk... site).
The problem with ads I've encountered is that some people like them for whatever reason. They like that they are relevant to something they are looking to buy or might want and arguing with them, that it's usually a waste of money at best and a security risk at worst isn't worth it. You simply cannot change their mind. One might say they are too far gone. -

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2025 03:53:16 JST iced depresso @phnt @RustyCrab @mischievoustomato @sun unfortunately the ad game isn't really one thats big on ethics and screening all your fake top search results costs.
the costco model of just filling your wages from a sub and not worry about the rest is probably the best -

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2025 03:55:51 JST iced depresso @sun @mischievoustomato @RustyCrab @phnt there was a small shop youtuber who had a whole thing about this
basically etsy started as a marketplace to sell from small shops. then it got famous as a place to buy bespoke and small shop stuff from. at some point drop shippers discovered it and are polluting the storefront with stuff they buy from ali and flip at a 4x markup.
they basically buy toy bears and random shit in bulk and then claim its hand made. many of them are not even taking new photos they're literally copy pasting the art from ali and just like slapping "homemade bear" on it -

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2025 03:58:47 JST iced depresso @sun @mischievoustomato @RustyCrab @phnt identity can sort of be checked since the government already has paperwork for it. theres personal tax IDs, SEC forms, business regs, D&B numbers
though if you are working internationally as google does it becomes more complicated.
all this answers on its own is if they filed paperwork so people know where to look to sue. and if they're in a jurisdiction that can be sued.
if its a russian or chinese business forget it -

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2025 03:59:45 JST iced depresso @sun @RustyCrab @mischievoustomato @phnt in theory dunning bradstreet already manages assigning UUIDs to businesses and the government has been moving people away from cage codes and such to just using the D&B numbers
the big advertiser unions could do similar thingsChristmas Sun likes this. -

mischievoustomato@0.5dollah.click's status on Monday, 13-Jan-2025 04:02:24 JST mischievoustomato @phnt @RustyCrab @sun @icedquinn yeah there's a convenience factor, i can see it, but at the same time I'm immune to that since I only care about sale listings when I'm gonna buy something, and when I am gonna buy something I go directly to the store pages, not ads
