@Radical_EgoCom People just don't care. They consume and airtravel more every year. They vote right wing and love to watch coppers maze and beat protesters.
I wouldn't say it's pointless. "Preaching to the choir" is a thing for a reason. It gives our allies motivation to continue talking about these important issues, which will eventually make their way to people who don't agree with us and potentially change their minds.
@Radical_EgoCom Saying this to a climate fact slogan sharer got me blocked yesterday. It's pointless here at least. Preaching to choir.
@Radical_EgoCom Slogans and sitting demonstrations have had 0 impact on anything.
Obviously, more needs to be done than making slogans and sit-ins (e.g., revolution), but to say that they've had 0 effect is inaccurate. They've had, and still do have, an effect in at least changing some people's minds and bringing attention to climate change.
@Radical_EgoCom Ok 0.1 then.
@Radical_EgoCom Climate change is just one symptom of the tumor called capitalism. Sure LA fires and many other such catastrophes are tragic but our leaders knew it would happen and they don't care. It just gets worse every year. But the real big problem is:
@Radical_EgoCom It's one of Limits of Growth simulation scenarios, that was originally made in the 70's. It has been quite accurate and changing the parameters today don't make much change to the peak and fall.
The highr we manage to push the peak, the worse is the aftermath. Climate change is a part of the pollution variable.
@Radical_EgoCom You can look at so many simulations and the outcome is about the same if you keep the inputs rational. Here's one that shows the observed happened values with the standard run. Infinite growth is impossible with finite resources.
@Radical_EgoCom If humanity could share and got rid of the rich, studies tell that 1/3 of the global production that is done now would keep everyone happy and fed with good standards of living. Our problem is the rich.
Until we're all dead, there's still hope for humanity's survival.
@Radical_EgoCom We passed the 1.5 C line already. If everything possible would be done now, it would still go above 2 C. Optimists at IPCC say 3 C is where it will stop, but that would need imaginary future technologies and their calculations miss some variables. James Hansen has been telling about it but who cares. We are probably on path to 4-5 C. 3 C will kill billions of humans and wildlife and civilization can't survive it. There isn't much hope anymore.
@Radical_EgoCom But we should try and do all we can. It would be essential to drag the guilty politicians and fossil fuel executives and owners to ICC and hang them for their crimes against humanity while they are still alive.
But guys like Trump, Putin, Musk and Netanyahu just do what they want and laugh. Nothing will change.
@Radical_EgoCom Maybe, but civilization won't survive.
I don't see how you could know that.
@Radical_EgoCom Well the civilization we have is made of so many small pieces and it needs every piece to function.
Modern civilization will likely not exist, but some different forms of civilizations could.
@Radical_EgoCom Well sure there would be a new primitive civilization or many, if there still are humans. But the civilization we have will be gone.
Okay, you seem to have a very bleak perception of the future that I just do not share at all, and I don't see how believing the future will be absolutely horrible no matter what is beneficial to anybody. It's just nihilism for no ones sake.
@Radical_EgoCom Well I don't see a way out anymore. I hope I'm wrong but there are no changes or solutions even now when the problem has been known for decades.
Then, just keep your nihilism to yourself because it isn't productive at all.
@Radical_EgoCom People should wake up to reality so they might do something.
Nihilism isn't the solution to convincing people to take action. If people believe there is no hope, they won't be motivated to make any change because they won't believe change is possible.
@Radical_EgoCom No one is taking action even now when Paris promises have been broken and pollution and consumption just accelerates. People think someone else will fix it while they fly to another valtion and eat meat. People aren't motivated.
I know, and nihilism isn't going to motivate them.
@Radical_EgoCom It's not nihilism.
