A friend just asked if we're affected by the fires in LA.
It's easy to underestimate the size of California. It's a shorter trip from Paris to Stuttgart than from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
No, we're safe from this one.

@drakenblackknight LOL! I've heard similar. “Want to have dinner?” No. No, I don’t. I’ll meet you for the weekend or not at all.
@tek
I keep hearing stories about people getting tired of "Oh, you're in SF? I'm going to be in LA for the weekend, we should hang out!" It'll take around 6 hours to drive from LA to SF, and it's roughly the same distance from NYC to Raleigh, NC.
@drakenblackknight Oh, you're in Buffalo? Mrs Tek's from Tonawanda!
But yeah. She talks about people asking if she was OK on 9/11. Umm, yeah.
@tek
A few years back...
Someone else: "Are you okay? I heard it was snowing pretty heavily in New York!"
Me: "Not here."
SE: "I just saw it on the news that it's snowing in Buffalo!"
Me: "Buffalo's at least 7 hours away from my place by train not including commute time to Penn Station."
SE: "...oh."
@drakenblackknight Oops, NM. I read that in reverse.
@nateb Hah, yeah. “It was a 3.7 in Fresno. We weathered it, just barely.”
@tek When I lived in Cali my friends and family would text me every time there was an earthquake anywhere. "You okay?" "That was literally 3 hours away from me. But thank you for the concern."
@tek How considerate of them!
I have contacts overseas. And every now and then I'm asked if I'm ok when they read news about a natural disaster, mass shooting, or civil unrest "over there in the US"
@jdoe Heh, I’ve had that. “Did that blizzard affect you?” “The one in Denver? Uh, no.”
@tek "But it was in the western hemisphere where you live, right?"
