kaia (kaia@brotka.st)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:17:33 JST kaia that the fediverse could not manage to attract the people now departing from X despite the alternative being a worse commercial platform is to be lamented. -

Andy (pixel@desu.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:22:47 JST Andy @kaia to be honest, having a network of around 10m people is still massive.
Bluesky has the benefit that it basically was made by ex-Twitter people, looking like Twitter, and of course that's then the easiest option to jump ship to.
And, the User Experience of fedi is not optimal sadly, and users aren't exactly the smartest/don't want to think too much nowadays.

翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:28:16 JST 翠星石 @kaia There is no mere alternatives - here is the pillar of freedom and at bluesky is the pillar of servitude and they've intentionally chosen to make the wrong choice. -

Druid (druid@shrine.moe)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:29:57 JST Druid @kaia But real talk they would never have come here anyway because they can't get their precious noombers, they can't get into fights with public figures in the desperate hope of being in screenshots either kaia likes this. -

Druid (druid@shrine.moe)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:29:58 JST Druid @kaia I'm glad tbh, I don't want twitter normies here, I want this to continue to be a disproportionately autistic community :gigachad: -

Oblomov (oblomov@sociale.network)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:30:23 JST Oblomov @kaia the thing is, “worse” is in the eye of the beholder: most people value immediate comfort over longer-term benefits.

Andy (pixel@desu.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:32:30 JST Andy @kaia also, I felt like explaining had exactly the opposite effect to people then wanting to try out fedi.
I think for the concept of a social media site, it was kinda averse to them that it even has to be explained in the first place (technically you wouldn't need to, but people often jump ahead and do so).

Andy (pixel@desu.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 22:32:31 JST Andy @kaia also, while Bluesky is decentralized, it only having one large instance "in the simplest technical terms" right now is also a benefit
since the federation aspect is the thing that makes fedi hard(er) to use.
and the past has shown that people don't really care about federation, they probably can't even do something with that term.

Nicro (nicro@fedi.absturztau.be)'s status on Friday, 10-Jan-2025 23:01:47 JST Nicro @kaia I mean, by that notion, why didn't they go to Tumblr? Some did. Some went to co-host too. But the mass is going to follow the influencers, news stations and corpo-accounts, and those that did leave Twitter, went to Bluesky.
Also, I don't buy Bluesky actually wants federation, the protocol is difficult to host and I don't think it scales well.kaia likes this.
