   I agree with everything Ariadne said, so this is more of an "add on" situation but:

   We're talking about a country that already elected a washed up cowboy movie actor who'd been reduced to pitching products on TV and got his start in politics by ratting out all his socialist friends in Hollywood at his wife's urging, POTUS and then gleefully let him detonate what was left of the New Deal. For this we ignore that he was a cracker fascist and declare him the greatest US President.

     The difference between Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, Ronny Reagan and Donald Trump more or less comes down to personal style and the American commitment to pretend. The only reason "Very Important PeopleTM" in the mainstream discourse have to pretend to be surprised by Trump is that collectively the American establishment has been entirely complicit in creating the political and propaganda conditions necessary to end up at a place where Trump is president, again.

     The idea that there is something exceptional or bewildering about the United States electing an unhinged embarrassing fascist as president only holds water if you ignore AT LEAST every waking moment of American history since the start of the Cold War.

     And I'm being generous with that timeline here.

     Again, the more you KNOW about American history, the more absurd the idea that Trump being elected represents an aberration in American politics becomes; but at a very minimum it insults my intelligence to watch high-paid propaganda mouthpieces who've spent years humping Reagan's dead corpse pretend they're utterly baffled this could happen given the sheer number of similarities between that dipshit and Trump.
