I'm mid-career and I've just realised I have never received *any* mentoring on how to manage my workload, on how to explicitly recognise when I've taken on too much and how to proactively develop a system to manage saying no to more things.

Mostly I just OCAFO (Over Commit And Find Out).

What systems does everyone else use?

@tomstafford I'm in the same situation but recently I've read a few things somewhere (forgot where) and found them helpful: 1) "If it's not a HELL YEAH !!, it's a no". But, to put it in practice with people you don't want to say no to, say: "I have other priorities at the moment, maybe at another time in my career".... so 2) Never say I don't have the time (because if it were a Hell Yeah you would), say it's not a priority. And 3) never give an answer when asked. No matter what "Thank you for thinking of me with this opportunity, I'll get back to you as soon as possible with an answer". Sleep on it, in the morning you'll know if it's a hell yeah priority. Good luck !
