It is a fascinating and delightful affordance of mastodon that when I want people to pay special attention to something I can just say "boost this please" and then people boost it, and it's fine. This behavior on Twitter was a taboo and no matter how earnestly I had good reasons for emphasizing certain tweets over others, begging for retweets felt like the most pathetic form of engagement baiting and I was _extremely_ reluctant to do it.

On Mastodon, we are the algorithm.
Besides things that matter to me personally, I have a policy of always boosting job openings and job hunting posts. I generally try to boost other posts that might useful to other readers, or where someone is looking for information in a non-annoying way, even if it is not a topic that interests me strongly.
As a former librarian I also tend to boost publication announcements unless they are very badly structured...
That's my algorithm.
