Open-access #CommunityFridges in Berlin were a social innovation to improve inclusion: they don't require personal connections nor the use of an online service, so they reduce gatekeeping in #FoodSharing (Oona Morrow 2019).

In the USA, some cases reproduced the power imbalances of traditional #FoodAid and displayed white saviorism (Anna Arons 2022).

In Chicago they partnered with Black and Brown people-run orgs (Saria Lofton 2021).

      Community fridge
A community fridge is a refrigerator (colloquially "fridge") located in a public space. Sometimes called freedges, they are a type of mutual aid project that enables food to be shared within a community. Some community fridges also have an associated area for non-perishable food. Unlike traditional food pantries, these grassroots projects encourage anyone to put food in and take food out without limit, helping to remove the stigma from its use. The fridges take a decentralized approach, often being maintained by a network of volunteers, community members, local businesses, and larger organizations. Food in community fridges is primarily donated by individuals or food rescue organizations and can be sourced from a variety of places. Major grocers like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods donate large amounts of excess foods to food rescue organizations that then donate to these fridges. The food donated would have otherwise been thrown out. The main aim of community fridges is to reduce food insecurity, while also mitigating food waste. They enable people facing hardship to have easy access to fresh, nutritious food. Fridges offer a wide...

@tunda #MutualAid is one piece of the puzzle, not the entire solution. So is the state. Please read the mentioned references to see how the community fridges addressed some of the issues with centralised aid.

@nemobis Everyone should be able to afford a fridge and food. A state must ensure this. Such “community solutions” are just an expression of a state not fulfilling its responsibility.
      Not to forget “community capitalism”!

@CapitaineMoustache Excellent! I've now added the one community fridge I know about in #Helsinki (I've visited a couple times and always recommend it for random acts of food sharing), so #Finland is no longer at zero on the map. :) https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/12473669811#map=19/60.188401/24.945931

@nemobis Is it mapped in OpenStreetMap? It may!
      There is a tag "amenity=fridge" I see, it's a proposal.
      https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dfridge
"access=yes" could be added to signify it's a community fridge.

Edit: there is a much appropried tag: "amenity=food_sharing"!
