How did we culturally decide what becomes pie and what does not? Why apples and berries and not grapes?

I know some of it has to do with trying to use an abundance of readily available produce before it goes bad, but there has to be more to it than that.

@aleen Maybe some things are too watery (grapes, melons), and some berries fall apart too easily (raspberries), to make good pies. I know blackberry pie can be a thing, but I wouldn't eat it, myself. I like raw blackberries, but too many seeds to make a satisfying bite of pie, I think.

@aleen But then grapes are about the same consistency as cherries, and they make a good pie... Hmmm.
