   You might have read about ‘Calexit’: the genuine call for West Coast states to secede and become an independent country after the US election.
   The idea went crazy on social media after the U.S election results were announced in November, with millions calling for it to happen.
   But now a new idea has been gaining traction, which doesn’t even involve the hassle of creating an entirely new country.
   What if Democrat-leaning states just join Canada?
   It’s being touted as the perfect solution

     The last time the Democrats seceded from the Union was in 1861, with the civil war ensuing at Fort Sumter. The Southern Democrats formed the Confederate States of America partly to preserve the institution of slavery.
     
     Republican President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery and forced the Union back together through a bloody war against the Democrat-run South.
     
     When I see talk of succession, I am reminded of this history, and how it shows the dangerous conflict generated by partisan politics, especially when one party is afraid of losing power and control over its chattel slaves or entitlement supporters.
