     Just because people suffered more in the past doesn't mean that modern-day people's suffering should be disregarded. You clearly don't care about the suffering of others if the first thing that you say in response to hearing about the suffering people endure is "well, did people suffer more in the past, because if they did, then who cares if people are suffering now," and not "what can we do to alleviate people's suffering."
