@druid very abandoned, pretty much as my other gameservers. It's running Mineclone2 IIRC but not very updated - need to get on that.
Vintage story is https://www.vintagestory.at/ it's basically minecraft survival turned up to eleven. They have a "human evolution" mode or whatever it's called - you start making stone tools, find clay, smelt bronze to make bronze tools etc. It also has eldritch monsters (and magic I think). image.png
@druid i don't think there are shaders but minimap is possible i think. Since there is interest now I'll work on brining it to a presentable state after new years.
@druid@hj hj and I just checked and it's not really a playable experience right now. there are no mobs, no ore except coal as far as I can tell. there's no hunger.
@druid@kaia server is running very obsolete version, here's a excerpt from recent version
Gameplay summary * Sandbox-style gameplay, no goals * Survive: Fight against hostile monsters and hunger * Mine for ores and other treasures * Magic: Gain experience and enchant your tools * Use the collected blocks to create great buildings, your imagination is the limit * Collect flowers (and other dye sources) and colorize your world * Find some seeds and start farming * Find or craft one of hundreds of items * Build a railway system and have fun with minecarts * Build complex machines with redstone circuits * In creative mode you can build almost anything for free and without limits
@druid@kaia people be like "it's GNU/car all over again" then proceed to shove 9001 shaders, mods into minecraft's ass and even more mods, use different implementation of minecraft server, set up kubernetes for it and custom panel and let's not forget - renaming jar into zip and back to jar just to remove META-INF
if you want out-of-box easy to run and pretty experience - vintage story is way to go
@kaia@hj@druid I didn't even know the minetest server existed and I wouldn't know about the Factorio one if HJ didn't talk about it around the new DLC craze.
Maybe organizing some game nights would work, but there probably aren't that many gamers on here and even less play MP. I certainly mostly stopped playing games.
@druid@kaia@hj a1ba had a minetest instance before and apparently it eats a lot storage in short-term, compared to long-term Minecraft instance it's just doesn't make any profit cc @a1ba correct me if I misunderstood
@nerthos@hj@druid I've never played Vintage story, but the lack of content would probably be an advantage. Modern minecraft cca 1.16 and newer is too bloated for my taste.
@hj@druid huge improvement on player ability to change the shape of buildings (dynamic voxel scale changes from full blocks to mini block grids) but it's probably way less deep than minecraft right now due to the huge difference in development years Very good if you just like to build though
@phnt@hj@druid Say whatever you want but I love mending. Administering non-renewable resources was the least fun part of minecraft and it completely fixed it, I can now use the fastest tool forever instead of carrying several cheaper ones for lower tier blocks.
Villagers are optional though. You can just lock them in solitary forever or lava their villages and progress like it's still the beta. I enjoy building cities around my castles and then never interacting with my big nosed vassals.
@phnt@hj@druid I play 1.21 semi-regularly (mostly offline during work downtime) and I like it for the huge range of blocks to use, but then again I tend to play 70% creative and play around with worldedit a lot to build cool stuff. Never enjoyed multiplayer survival as much because of the race for resources nature of it.
But yeah, for fedi server at least as a start a relatively simpler version without 500 blocks and 300 mobs would likely be better.
@nerthos@hj@druid The variety of blocks for building is the only advantage imo. The combat system is boring and mending completely broke the enchanting system. Villagers can be used to skip 70% of progress anyway...
