    As I am working on designing new travel documents, I updated my library to the eighth edition of the ICAO9303 series [1]. These books define what a travel document (passport, identity card, visa) MUST contain and what is optional. It’s interesting to compare what changes here over the many years of this open standard. 1/n

      So while every country designs their own travel documents, they all tend to follow (exceptions of course exist ;) the ICAO rules. Once you know about these rules, it becomes really interesting to compare passports, identity cards from various countries. It’s a weird hobby, agreed, but I like these weird things that unbeknownst to many governments big chunks of our modern life. And I respect the often unknown artists/designers that do the hard work! 4/4

      @jwildeboer I have a blog post sitting in my drafts for probably 10 years now about the SoM. Such strange thing to remain. Basically medieval tech debt. Kind of like Vatican City, but weirder.

      @jwildeboer
      Place if birth is not a memorable thing for many people. Japanese people applying for a UK visa get surprised by the question. Some do not actually know beyond, usually, Japan, because it's not a thing here.

      For A TON of more design inspirations you can go to the EU database on valid travel documents and their security features at PRADO [1], the Public Register of Authentic identity and travel Documents Online. #ThanksEU :)

      @jwildeboer that post needs a lot of work. It was a whole thing on micronations, seasteading (which is now dead, but morphed into an aborted California town to be founded by billionaires (Yes, both have Milton Friedman’s grandson at the center.) https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-07-22/silicon-valley-billionaires-put-plans-for-new-california-city-on-hold), the terra nullis along the Sudanese-Egyptian border, Antarctica, the moon, and how sovereignty is basically achieved by making taking it away more hassle than what it’s worth. A balance of terror.
