For the last time: The illegal / legal immigrant distinction is a manufactured crisis designed to mask deeper anxieties about white supremacy and generate support for nativist policies.

Paul Sutton (zleap@qoto.org)'s status on Monday, 30-Dec-2024 17:35:34 JST Paul Sutton I prefer the term 'undocumented' for those who are here without visas, if you are in a country with the correct visa, you can be afforded the same rights as others. So a working visa, also means you get paid properly, pay tax, get healthcare etc and can perhaps upgrade your visa at a later date.
If you are here without the right visa, I guess you don't exist on the system and are open to exploitation and abuse.
Watching some of the TV programs, I think one is housing inspectors where they follow housing officers around, people are living in atrocious conditions and can't get out of that as they fear they will be deported for not having the right paperwork, the people employing them, also take away their passports or other documentation so they are truly trapped in that situation.
There was one program where they follow police patrols, they found a woman wanding down the side of the road, unable to speak English, I think it turned out she wanted to be with family in Canada, ended up paying people who dumped here in England, she was lost, scared and confused having been exploited by traffikers.
We need to find a way to allow people to migrate cheaply and easily between countries, escape persecution, natural disasters, war etc but NOT escape justice, so if you commit a criminal offense, you should not be able to leave that country to escape the law.
Clearly the latter part of that needs to be the right balance, speaking out against the Iranian regime, is illegal in Iran, however so is rape, if you commit the latter you need to face justice, commit the former you should be able to seek protection from another safe country that recognises your situation.
