You know what? I'm gonna share ALL my #LinuxNewbie struggles - even the embarrassing fiascos - in case they may help fellow newbies.

Today's face palm moment: I spent over 30 minutes struggling with the copy and paste shortcuts. Yes, I'm aware on Linux they are Ctrl + Shift + C and Ctrl + Shift + V... but nothing worked.

I even tried a second keyboard, thinking my Italian QWERTY was to blame. Same thing with my US Bluetooth keyboard... until I realized: I needed to turn on the caps lock too 🤦♀️

@_elena It’s not just you – copy and paste on Linux is a nightmare (wait until you find out how many apps have their own copy/paste buffers which they don’t share with other apps by default). But full points for persisting.

@_elena have a 3 buttons mouse? one of the things i miss the most on other systems is the mouse buffer.

      1. mark some text eith the mouse pointer
      2. pressing the middle button (wheel) let the text out again.

one of a thousand possible replies ;)

@_elena Very appreciated. It's nice to see you don't need to already know about everything to get into linux.

@_elena Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V should work the vast majority of the time, no? I find I only need to add Shift in terminal applications.

@_elena that's the first time I heard about that, honestly.

(Also, whether it's ctrl+shift or ctrl+alt or something else actually depends on the term program you're using.)

@_elena I suspect it comes from a legacy of Unix being a bunch of small terminal programs with a graphical interface, and concept of a Universal clipboard, only coming much later. But what it means in practice is I have used Linux on and off for 30 years and I still have no idea how to copy from Emacs and paste into another app (see, for eg https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/CopyAndPaste).

@_elena Also there is an app (I think it’s gnome-tweak-tool) that, if you’re using a gnome-based desktop, will let you swap ctrl and cmd keys, so in apps that have somewhat sensible copy and paste keys, you can use cmd-c and cmd-v instead of control. This makes life much easier as a Mac user.

YMMV based on the specific desktop environment and apps you're using, but ...

In my experience, all cut'n'pasting in desktop GNU/Linux is

      * Bash terminal: CTRL-SHIFT-C to copy and CTRL-SHIFT-V to paste

      * Everything else: CTRL-c to copy, CTRL-v to paste

Can you tell me exactly which apps on which distro don't fit this pattern?

Fedivers, I need your help! 🧵 I have ~20 years experience with Microsoft and I want to get the "same" knowledge ASAP for Linux, specifically Ubuntu based distributions. I'll go about the details in this thread and you could help me on my tiny instance with a boost to get some reach and maybe get some help! Some things I'm asking might not make sense so feel free to correct me or add other hashtags in replies :chyeah: #linux #ubuntu #help #training #teaching #knowledge #knowhow 1/5

It's been years since I've used a mouse. I enjoy using a trackpad. I like the convenience of not needing extra space to move the mouse.

Also, I'm a fan of keyboard shortcuts and CLI usage. One you get your shortcuts the way you like them, you'll get things done faster.

@_elena I've been using Linux since the Raspberry Pi 3 was a new thing. I still consider myself a noob, but I almost always enjoy the learning process involved whenever I'm trying something new with Linux.

Just out of curiosity, are you on the latest LTS (24.04) or on the latest release (24.10)?

      > I'm in Ubuntu (the latest version)

I've mostly used Ubuntu derivatives. Especially Trisquel, which I recommend to anyone whose graphics and WiFi chips can run without proprietary blobs. Also spent time on Mint and LMDE.

      > I was trying to copy text from Vivaldi and paste it into Terminal. I was pressing Shift + Ctrl + c and Shift + Ctrl + v

What I would expect to work is CTRL+c in Vivaldi, and CTRL+SHIFT+V in Terminal. Caps lock should reverse everything, not fix it. Maybe a bug?

@_elena Yeah, I won’t pretend to know why that works. But I do sympathize because I’m doing my own experiment with living with Linux (again), which I’m occasionally documenting here: https://damonism.net/tags/the-year-of-linux-on-the-desktop/
