How do people build a reliable WiFi repeater?

I’ve tried a few things but none work well

    Raspberry Pi Zero W

Can theoretically do client + AP if they are both on the same channel, which would be the case here, but I couldn’t find a guide for #bookworm, everything is for earlier releases and as it happens, networking was thoroughly overhauled

Can’t do bridge from what I understand, it has to be routing, so that’s not in the official documentation

    Raspberry Pi model 3

Has both Ethernet and WiFi so that should make it less confusing (can do a bridge) and there’s a guide in the official doc, but nothing helpful for when things don’t work out

And it didn’t work for long…

    ESP8266

I was able to flash a sketch on a device and my phone is currently connected to it, but despite a strong signal everything is slooooow

I tried positioning the repeater in various places but that isn’t the issue, it’s just that there is added lag inherent in the system

Also I couldn’t add a second repeater to reduce signal loss at each step, I have no clue why, the second just won’t show up unless I place it near the root AP

I guess I could try with an ESP32 in case the lag comes from the lack of cycles, but really this feels like a patch on a patch at this point

My preferred option would be the Zero W since I have a bunch of those

I’m assuming I would have to place 3 total

My main issue is that I’d like to have WiFi in the kitchen, but my main router is placed diametrically opposite and the signal doesn’t reach

There is an Ethernet port on the same floor but that signal also won’t reach

Either way, I have to repeat the signal at least once
