Online community are like coral reefs. How are new coral reefs established? A single coral my attach to a rock, or bit of debris, corals can support many other organisms, sponges, small fish, crabs, cluster around, then more corals, more diversity.

The fediverse is anchored around enthusiasm for technology and (formal) education. We can branch out from this point, aggregate, spread. In the long run this is better for the whole community.

There are some creatures we shouldn't welcome at all because they destroy reefs.

But there are also many communities that might seem irrelevant, no intersection with your own interests, or even annoying or boring... but that would make the overall community stronger.

Size matters. A single cluster of corals can be easily destroyed. An online community of millions is more robust.

And it's that robustness through size that I wish more people would value.

I don't care about most of what's going on in NYC. But I love living in a big diverse city because only a very large city can provide some of the things I enjoy ... like the kind of job that I have, and the neighborhood I live in. There is a niche for me because there are many many niches.

With the exception of a few things the fedivese does about 90 percent of what *I* want from social media. I can ask questions about things I care about, see photos of cute cats, find out about neat projects people are working on and get inspired. It's working fine *for me* but it wouldn't work even for most of the other teachers I work with in the math department because they are NOT as nerdy as this place is. Good lord.

And the fedi is fragile because it's tiny.

Sometimes walking through the city I'll encounter a parade with lavish costumes, or a cue of people waiting to enter a church, or pairs of people in fancy dress filing off into a theatre. And I have no idea who they are, or what they are doing, I have no idea where they are going or what they are so worked up about, but I love that. That every single day is a Big Important Day for someone in the city, even if it's just another boring day for me.

That sense of other lives with their own purpose.

It's one of the things I think about every time I go to a hospital. You have people terrified about their upcoming surgeries, people fighting for their lives, people dying, people celebrating their new babies, people coming into the ER in pain. But then around all of that, you have the staff, nurses, doctors, orderlies, and for them, it's all just ... Tuesday.

@futurebird And for some that's somehow upsetting because it shows them they're not the main character 🤦

@futurebird The lesson they should have taken away from :birdsite:: You never want to be the Main Character.

@futurebird You're one of the staples of the fedi that makes this place awesome.

@futurebird so you're saying that the toxic entities in the fedi are now called COTS (crown-of-thorns starfish)
