It's almost certain by now that tomorrow, 2024-12-23, the #Fedora council will announce the "decision to migrate Fedoras git forge to #forgejo and sunset #pagure." That's a HUGE win for @forgejo IMHO.
With my Fedora Council hat on, I'd say it is a win for Fedora.
It has been a long open discussion in the project whether tools to make the project should be considered part of it. This discussion is far from done, but I am glad that we are recognising the value of FOSS and collaboration on the development tools, not just the content being developed.
@bookwar It's really striking how I had the exact same discussion in my team at Red Hat (Gitlab or Forgejo) and came to the same conclusion. The people behind @forgejo have built a solution with a huge potential to be at the forefront of truly distributed software production. I like!
@jwildeboer this post gave me the motivation to look into Forgejo... and what can I say... 30 Minutes later it was running on my Raspi and I already have 3 active repos on it...
And coding (admittedly with a lot of LMM help!) is just a hobby / learning vehicle for me, not a job. Although I do create tools and automations for my job.
Forgejo feels exactly right, I never really wanted to have my stuff on one of the commercial platforms.
@jwildeboer @bookwar We'll definitely be at FOSDEM again, and it was a pleasure to talk to some of you last year. Maybe we can schedule a meetup in one of the evenings, talking in depths about Forgejo and collaboration opportunities.
We can also schedule an online meeting before or after.
