🇬🇹 Guatemala Raids Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Sect Lev Tahor Over Child Abuse Allegations
Guatemalan authorities raided the compound of the extremist ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect Lev Tahor, taking 160 minors and 40 women into protective custody following allegations of abuse.
The raid, conducted 55 miles southeast of Guatemala City, uncovered suspected child remains and followed complaints of forced pregnancies, rape, and mistreatment of minors, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
Lev Tahor has faced legal issues globally, with leaders previously convicted of kidnapping and child sexual exploitation in the U.S., and arrests made in Mexico. The sect has members in countries including Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Guatemala, and Israel.
Guatemala’s Interior Minister emphasised the priority of protecting children during the operation. Investigations are ongoing.
