Sonic 3 is a good, fun movie*. I genuinely believe that the more weird lore shit they embrace, the more fun and the less generic superhero-y it comes out.
Also, there's so many great easter eggs, but it never goes full Ready Player One by making those references plot-critical — they're there to make fans laugh, and that's about it.
(*with the caveat that Jim Carrey is still a terrible human being who arguably is complicit in the deaths of hundreds of thousands)

The human characters added in the first Sonic movie are, thankfully, given much less screen time and plot focus. They're still there, but in ways that aren't as grating as before. Both Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves completely sell Knuckles and Shadow, respectively.
The fight choreography is really amazing, as expected, and gets a lot of mileage out of just how *weird* Sonic and Shadow are as characters.

@ghpancardo Totally with you on that. I did like that in Sonic 3, he seems to be given a lot tighter direction and a lot less room to just play himself. A couple of the best one-liners in the movie, imho, were Eggman moments... given what a hack Carrey is, that's one hell of an accomplishment in direction.

@xgranade I have always thought Jim is an awful actor with no comedic talent. He's the only thing I dislike from Sonic, he's less talented than the average mall clown.
