    This week's #ThursdayFiveList theme is #TheMachine, and I'm going to be running a timer to see how long before someone posts that one Hawkwind song (which I like a lot and have a fan theory about, actually).

      @HauntedOwlbear @MASTERBOOTRECORD For the ignorant among us, who don't even know who Hawkwind are, which song? I'm interested, now.

      @guyjantic

      Hawkwind are a space rock band that have been a huge influence on and part of a wide range of rock, metal and electronic music over the years. Silver Machine was their token chart hit.

      It's a really great track, and Lemmy's vocals on various versions of it are great, although I do feel that it's a bit over exposed compared to the band's more interesting work.

      Here's a fun live version that does a bit more than the single release:

      @guyjantic Honestly, you're in for treat if you take a liking to these. Their back catalogue and family of related bands is immense and impressive.

      There's chunks of it not even under the same band name

      @HauntedOwlbear I've been listening to some of their stuff, and I have classified them in my mind as "interesting metal." That's a really judgmental term, but I'm not really a metal listener, in general, so a lot of it sounds similar to me, and isn't super interesting. Hawkwind seems a lot more interesting (to me) than most. They're going to keep being an interest :)

      @guyjantic Honestly, I am a metal listener and I can't say that I entirely disagree!

      They somehow managed to go from being a very early influence on the genre to evolving alongside its avant-garde and psychedelic elements, and I definitely agree that they're interesting.

      @guyjantic I'll declare literally anything metal given half a chance, in addition to gleefully participating in our cultural hobby of inventing six new subgenres every Thursday. :D

      @HauntedOwlbear Relief :)
      I didn't want to come off as some outsider judging an entire meta-genre. I know the genres I enjoy more often also develop their patterns and ruts (and I really enjoy some of those ruts*). It's just how genres work, I think.

      *Not in the Australian sense. I mean, yes, in the Australian sense, but that's not what I meant right here.
