   We had a rabid raccoon in our yard, called it in. Our small town has no animal control, but it turns out does have a rabid raccoon epidemic. The first cop said he was dealing with one a day

   They called in for backup. Three cops. The raccoon escaped.

     Real talk I am glad they sent someone though; apparently our friend's neighbor had a rabid skunk in their yard a bit ago and the town refused to send anyone

     I did not anticipate sending a message to a contractor who was supposed to work on something on our house today "sorry, even though they chased it off, I feel ethically obliged to tell you that three police officers chased off a rabid raccoon in our driveway in which you'd be working today and we don't know where it went"

     @cwebber set out a large bowl and fill it with a mixture of Mountain Dew, Antifreeze, and Golden Malrin fly bait.
     
     The raccoons will eat it up and die very quickly.

     @carcosa yeah maybe next time. this time we just called the city and asked for animal control. that's how we found out there wasn't any.

     @cwebber Depends on your location, but it might have been a good idea to call the state wildlife or natural resources department. They might be able to mobilize better-trained or more experienced staff for this situation. The state or county health department is also relevant.

     Okay UPDATES, the rabid raccoon turned out to be in the tree behind our house

     The cops came to get the raccoon right, they're gonna get him with their pole and everything

     But do they get rid of him? NO! The cops just took the rabid raccoon kicking and screaming and let him roll down the hill to hang out on the bank of the river by our house where he STILL IS

     Cool, this is awesome, one of the scariest diseases to possibly contract and there's an epidemic of it in our town and you got him, you got the critter with it and you just moved him to the river

     And note: This river is separated from our house (and our neighbors ... with their small children ...) by one narrow service road. So the cop went to all of that effort to move the rabid raccoon about fifteen feet.
