new mormon mission in my area. i feel pretty bad for the missionaries, they're not being funded by the church and have to live in a pretty expensive area on their own dime. most people see them as annoying, but they're just kids straight out of high school doing church door to door sales essentially. they're away from home for the first time, and instead of going somewhere cool, they're stuck in a college town for 2 years, delaying their own education. they're also often pretty lonely. i like talking to them when im not in a rush, because i know more about the temples, secret handshakes, and history than they do. they do not like the testament that i bear lol

@Ezzy okay, then id rather not get into an argument, since you have your own lived experiences. im just saying what i see from the outside, at the end of the day you make your own decisions

@Ezzy are you a member?

@zonk not anymore, no

@Ezzy why not? it overrides your identity, forces you to pay tithe, makes you do unpaid labor for the church. and you are excommunicated if you don't blindly follow. there are plenty of cultish ideas at the real core of it that most members are oblivious to, which are explicitly kept hidden from them until they're "ready". the complicated "heaven" flowchart-esque machinations should already ring huge red flags imo

@zonk doesn't force you to pay tithing, doesn't force you to do labor,,, and I haven't seen anyone get excommunicated regardless of what they've said
And what do you mean "overrides your identity"

@Ezzy oh it's pretty obviously a cult, but you won't get any members to change their mind if you say it to their face. best you can do is encourage them to dig a little into the origins

@zonk mmm,,,,, not really a cult as much as any religion

@zonk I mean calling it a cult isn't doing the majority of members any good

@Ezzy it's a pretty horrible cult to be in, i feel sorry for everyone growing up in that environment. hopefully some exposure to the outside world will help them a little bit, even if the missionaries need to be within sight and sound of each other

@kaia they pretend not to see joseph smith's polygamy, fraud, and true origins. i guess the whole bearing testimony thing is enforced to prevent that
