I went in to #Wicked knowing as little as possible. I listened to some of the songs 20 years ago (and from time to time since then), but didn't watch or read about the musical. I had a vague idea that it's backstory to the Oz movie and offers "the other side" to the Wicked Witch.
It's great! It's based on the book, so the story is solid, it's based on a stage musical, so the music is solid, the film adaptation is not a thin translation from stage, it's a fully cinematic film based on the stage material.
Loved the cameos by musical legends, loved the references to the 1939 film. We watched it the night before.
This film on its own works great as a prequel to the original film, but I'm really looking forward to Part 2 a year from now.
