@RustyBertrand Just adding that it was a Heinlein character who said that, not Heinlein himself. I once proved to a Heinlein newsgroup that an opinion expressed in a story was in fact his own, but it wasn't that one.

@TBYG @RustyBertrand Heinlein fans definitely come in various flavors.
I "won" an argument on a lawyers list about this principle, after a school shooting. It was a proud moment.
The Heinlein story which most typifies this argument, "Beyond This Horizon" posits empathy as the next step in human evolution, rather at odds with the "armed equals manners" premise.

I think a lot of people misunderstand or don't notice that part, much as a lot of people misunderstand or don't notice the details of the service requirements for voting in _Starship Troopers_.
