My dad was a career military officer. He attended high level meetings, and I remember him getting angry about the CIA at the dinner table. He would call them a "fucking cult" and complain about how they violated many of the basic values on which this country was founded.

He couldn't go into details, but they generally excused whatever they were doing with "national security." It was OK for them to violate the foundational principles of America if they were defending America.

Dad couldn't talk about whatever was making him mad when he ranted about it at the dinner table, but we've all read about the stuff the CIA got into, including overthrowing democratically-elected governments for bullshit imperialist reasons that only benefited a few wealthy Americans, not America in general.

It pisses me off to no end that the same intel people who used "national security" as an excuse to violate every principle this nation was founded on sat around and watched…

…a hostile takeover of our government by Russia.

Suddenly, all of their ruthlessness, all of their willingness to compromise America's most important values disappeared.

      They did nothing.

They just sat back and watched their government come under foreign control.

And they had to know better than us what was going on, and perhaps even how Putin did it.

But suddenly, "national security" was not an important enough consideration to prompt a response to any of this.

@tofugolem That's been boggling my mind too. Then there was the attempted coup on Jan 6, but ZERO consequences, even four years later. A coup! In the USA! As a Brit, dragged into wars to defend the West, freedom and democracy, it's quite the thing to witness. Most of all though, I remember everyone swearing blind that Terrorism wouldn't change our way of life. Yet, a mere twenty years later those stalwart patriots have gone full Fascist.
