@gorplop I was more thinking the “exposed nichrome wire wrapped around mica formers” type toasters where you can literally just touch mains potential metal inside. Or foolishly attempt to unjam a bagel with a metal knife.

@ret i'm thinking about it and if you made the wires holding the bread dense enough to be IP2X rated (fingerproof) it could be safer than a contact grill, could also add an isolation transformer to prevent shocks, then it should be safe even when sticking a knife inside it -

@gorplop yeah, there are things you could do for sure. 2kW isolation transformer could be a bit bulky though ;)
