   The other day I messaged a friend's niece to tell them how to disable a setting on their laptop that is potentially leaking their work to feed AI. They work in educational psychology, so I didn't want patient/student data getting fed into some black box. All well and good so far.

   What really surprised me however, was her reaction.

   "Don't I want AI to be trained?"

   Holy fuck do we have an educational failing in lay people's understanding of what LLMs mean and their implications.

     @sinewave @quixoticgeek well, to be fair, IT classes don't host lectures on the philosophic argument of morality. That's a separate field of study. One creates the tools, the other debates their use. Tapping other science fields for their perspectives. It's no wonder few understand the consequences of their own actions.

     @quixoticgeek i mean, last i checked IT education in general is currently focusing on stuff that was relevant in like.. 2009-ish? so doesn't surprise me

     in general, the tech field moves way too fast for current education to keep up, which leads to horrible gaps like this

     especially with tech companies also making it intentionally harder to teach about this kinda stuff
