I watched Mars Express yesterday. It was fantastic. It's almost like Ghost in the Shell but in French and in Mars. There's a lot more than just that though (it's really a film noir). This was directed by Jérémie Périn, who's notable for the Lastman animated series and the DyE: Fantasy music video, so a lot of that great art, music, and animation style is there. A good amount of sci-fi anime designs and inspirations are within the film, but there's plenty of other stuff added that makes it seem fresh and engaging throughout its 1.5 hour runtime. The story was fun to watch, even though it's mostly a mystery thriller involving robots, humans, and AI (it's handled a lot better than The Creator). It was screened in 2023 at Cannes and Annecy, but it's available to watch now since GKIDS acquired the film's rights for North American release (released in June of this year). It's currently available in English via Prime Video, but there's also a Blu-Ray out that I may end up buying soon. Regardless of format, I highly recommend watching it. Easily one of my favorite animated films.
