I have a feeling too many people from the Global North have no idea how expensive tech can be in the Global South.

Anna e só (anna@friend.camp)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Nov-2024 19:18:27 JST Anna e só Part of the reason why I have access to very expensive tech devices is because I traveled abroad and bought them in the countries I visited. Buying them in Brazil would mean paying the equivalent 2-3 devices of the same price. Being able to travel abroad is a privilege in and of itself.

Sky Leite (sky@social.coop)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Nov-2024 20:45:09 JST Sky Leite @anna I know this is a privileged take but it’s easily what frustrates me the most about living here. All of my hobbies are 2x as expensive for literally no reason. Not that I’m in a position to complain, but it’s frustrating nonetheless

Pete Ashton (pete@social.coop)'s status on Thursday, 28-Nov-2024 04:14:59 JST Pete Ashton @anna I was involved with an artist exchange a few years back hosting a cartoonist from Kenya and the first thing he wanted to do when he got to the UK was go to an art supplies shop to stock up on pens. So yeah, all kinds of tech.

Anna e só (anna@friend.camp)'s status on Thursday, 28-Nov-2024 04:20:11 JST Anna e só @thelooter In Brazil, being quite simplistic here, it’s a direct result of protectionism policies. The problem is, we don’t have Brazilian alternatives to many of those goods (and we’re far from developing national industries that can offer them).

(you don't need to answer if you don't want to, I understand and respect that not everyone wants to be an educator on social / political issues)
