I am thinking "invest", in the sense that this money wouldn't be given as part of a defined transaction or in exchange of services, and the only "return on investment" would be the existence of a global, distributed, universally accessible social media network.

I think of donations as a way to keep something that already exists, and investments as something that can support those who are working on the creation of something new.
Wikipedia already exists, people already use it and know how much they personally value.
This poll is my way of figuring out if we can answer the question of whether there are enough people out there who are willing to support R&D of an open web.
