Visited Mugon-kan (無言館, "Speechless Museum"), the Museum of the Fallen Art Students, in Ueda City, Nagano Pref where paintings & sculptures left by art students who fell in WW2 are displayed. Most were in their 20's & early 30's. Some returned to Japan, but died in hospital. Last portraits of loved ones, sketches, graduation certificates...glimmers of what might have been, of what was lost.

Description: A path paved with a mosaic of irregularly shaped, large stone tiles leads to a rectangular opening in one of the end walls of a grey, concrete building which is laid out in the form of a cross. The seemingly windowless building has dark, gable roofs and is surrounded by trees with leaves showing their autumn colours. Fallen leaves lie scattered on either side of the stone-paved path.

  Museum of the Fallen Art Students: A Tribute to Dreams Cut Short
  
  The student mobilization of 1943 sent thousands of young men off to die in the war effort, including many aspiring painters. In 1997, a Tokyo entrepreneur built a museum to preserve and display the works of those fallen art students. We traveled to Ueda in Nagano Prefecture to visit the Mugonkan on the eve of its twentieth anniversary and talk to 75-year-old founder and director Kuboshima Seiichirō.
