Context: CA passed AB413 in 2023, prohibiting parking within 20 feet of crosswalks on the approach side, to improve sight lines between pedestrians and drivers. It takes effect in January, although cities may issue warnings prior to that and SF has started doing so. SF has also said that painting all those spaces with red curbs would cost a lot so they're not going to do it, at least for now. Many drivers are now whining that they won't be able to remember not to park in the new daylight zones.

And as it happens, there are a lot of planters taking up sidewalk space these days. Not hard for a couple big guys to move into the street.
