I often think about Heinlein's arguably ahead-of-the-curve efforts to consider trans issues ("All You Zombies," "Number of the Beast," "I Will Fear No Evil," "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress") but it's really Wilson's "Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy" that took the wildest swing at the topic:
