   @HeyCallMeRed@transfem.social As a software developer I see all the younger interns do everything they don't understand using ChatGPT or Copilot.
   
   I've told them multiple times that if they don't know something it is better to just look it up in the documentation, because you'll actually understand how it works and how to find it.
   
   I feel like I will be part of the last generation of people who can actually understand what the hell they are doing when programming as I actually learned how to program using oreilly books and stuff like that.
   
   This younger generation will actually be unable to do their work without the internet or if one of these APIs ever goes down or something.

     I'm as skeptical as anyone about LLMs, but didn't a lot of people say the same thing about Google a decade or so ago?

     I don’t think anyone compared Google to brainrot or equivalent two decades ago when it started.

     Googles data centers back then also didn’t create a need for privately held nuclear power just to incorrectly guess the number of times the letter r appears in the word strawberry.

     Ok, I guess I must misrecall people saying that. You say that no one said it.

     And as far as the incredible power consumption, yes, it's terrible. Wasn't saying otherwise. It's incredibly wasteful.

     whether or not they did, were those hypothetical sayers wrong, would you say?
     
     I mean, I've read snippets of newspapers from a century ago in which people complained about supposed cognitive decline among youngsters, and it's clear that there's some exaggeration from doomsayers, but denying they're on to something is probably the opposite exaggeration IMHO

     @murph@hackers.town @HeyCallMeRed@transfem.social Not really, if you're using a search engine you still have to know how to search for something and read actual documentation that might be not be 100% to the thing you're trying to do so you have to piece together information to make it work.

     @murph@hackers.town @HeyCallMeRed@transfem.social Google has got a bunch of other problems tho like it being a horrible big tech monopoly, so that's why I'm just talking about search engines in general and not just Google.
