Seemingly all U.S. news is scary right now. Most of it falls along the lines of “this will happen”, “this could happen “, or “what’s the worst that could happen? follow me as I do a deep dive into every imaginable worst case scenario”. Hand-wringing, shrieking, property damage, and/or having a stroke are not helpful, constructive responses to the situation we find ourselves in (though a certain amount of conscious rage and panic simply cannot be helped). I’m speaking more for myself. I know how I personally handled 2015-2021, and if I don’t learn from my past errors in judgement and better utilize my coping skills, I really will have a stroke.
So while I read headlines I come across, I am not reading a lot of news right now. I never watch the news, which is mostly entertainment and outrage fodder, but I cut that out a few years ago. Most of the current political news is anxiety-inducing speculation, with more accurate previews of the coming apocalypse sprinkled about here and there. We should all know by now — without reading it on a news site — that Day 1 of the incoming administration is going to be a fucking nightmare, with one devastating, terrifying executive order after another. We need to focus on preparing ourselves as individuals, including making plans to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe, with what little time we have left — because once he’s in there, that rollercoaster will not stop for a long time. There won’t be time for relatively peaceful, quiet contemplation after Inauguration Day.
That being said, important news is still out there, much of unrelated to trump. I’m going to share an article like that in a comment below. I think it’s possible, with some disciplined vigilance, to keep abreast of crucial information as it is revealed without being swept away by the current (for now — come January, all bets are off). I’m doing my imperfect best. I try to devote no more than an hour each day to contemplating our future doom, preferably less. I’m working to steel myself, but also relax as best I can in the present. The shitstorm is coming either way. We are powerless to stop it. There will soon come a time we’ll need to get actively engaged, work to block every evil they throw at us, and do what we can to protect the most vulnerable among us from these monsters. Obsessing around the clock about that future time right now, before action is possible, will only harm my mental and physical health — I don’t know about you.
Be brave. Stay safe. Lots of love. ❤️
