What's the deal with Chat Apps?

Maybe I'm just #old but I don't understand the strong preference for a host of different platforms like #Discord/#matrix/#slack/#telegram... They seem little different than the 90s chatrooms I grew up with, but so many people see them as an absolute necessity for modern #communication including a replacement for #email. Can someone please enlighten me?
