I don't really know what's going on with C++ and 'safety', but from an outside view, what I hear certainly makes it sound like the C++ standards people are busy rowing themselves up a big river in Egypt. I don't think C++ is going to 'die' any more than C is, but it does feel like its day has passed and the standard's window of opportunity to meaningfully respond to Rust is gone.
