   you ever feel like. hypertext is supposed to be a thing written by people. or authored using a rich-text editor or something. but like, making a program that emits html on-demand. it's just not really it, is it? like you call up the server and ask it for a file and it's like "yeah sure i do happen to have a file with that name" and then it just makes up any old bullshit and sends it to you. it seems like that goes against the design, like it's a hack. we all just accept it. but it's wrong. imo

     like i feel like it should be allowed, but as a weird hacky thing that people do as a novelty thing. like "check it out, each time you refresh this page the servers sends something different" "hah thats cool. anyway. time to get back to some actual hypertexting where we make sites with content and stuff"

     "i've made it so my site has a counter at the bottom. it increments when someone requests the page" "neat hack! but it does introduce a dependency, you've added some kinda state to your website" "yeah it kind of ruins the idea of a website really, it was mostly just put there as a joke, but i agree it's wrong, so i'm going to remove it" "yeah best to remove it and never try anything like that again" "yeah. im gonna get back to work on laying out the tables for my downloads page now"

     i think a lot of stuff starts to make sense when you realise the entirety of web dev is kind of a goofy hack that should have been reverted
