   Guys (gn), I was just on Bluesky because I have an account on there for @gendercensus, and I asked a how-to question, and when I had the answer and didn't want more people telling me the same thing over and over I simply disabled replies for that post. It was so useful to be able to do that.

   The ability to disable replies was requested for Mastodon SIX (6) YEARS ago. It has 565 upvotes, and it's one of the most popular on the whole issue list. Here it is: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8565

   If you think it's a good, common-sense idea, please do head over there and log into Github and leave a 👍 at the bottom of the first post. If you feel strongly, leave a comment.

   If you think it's a bad idea because people should be subject to your replies whether they like it or not as this is the open internet etc etc, please do knob off.

     Anyway, "Disable replies" only needs 8 more 👍s to be the most popular open feature request on the issue list. If you have a Github account, go add a 👍. If you don't but you think it's a good idea, please boost this post. :)

     I kind of get what they're trying to say. People coding free and open source software deserve to be paid when as many people value it as value Mastodon.

     I agree with that and I'm glad Mastodon the project gets [checks Patreon page] at least £16,660 GBP ($20,835 USD, €20,013 EUR) per MONTH through Patreon alone. It should.

     But yes, that guy was a reply guy, an idiot, and a dick. And every single person I've blocked in the past 24 hours was a white coding dude. WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS [EDIT: THAT IS RHETORICAL, PLEASE DON'T ANSWER]

     One person blew me away by saying "if you need the feature, why not pay for its development?" I sat there for several minutes, giving them the benefit of the doubt, and I genuinely couldn't think of a way to explain to them how much of a dick they were (apparently unknowingly) being, so I gave up.

     But having mulled it for a few more minutes, I think it boils down to:

     0) It is *mind-bogglingly* rude to think it's appropriate to have any knowledge or input on a complete stranger's financial situation! And besides that, how do you know I DON'T already contribute financially??

     1) I don't have hundreds or possibly thousands of pounds/dollars/euros to spare, and not many people do.

     2) Even if I did, when you give Mastodon money it goes to Mastodon as a whole, not particular features being developed.

     3) That's not how Mastodon development works, you can't just bribe them into approving and making whatever features you want. Money isn't the obstacle, as was clear in my original post; management don't *want* to do it. (It's one of the more famous reasons why people like Mastodon: they don't just roll over for big money.) (Edit: Although, as we learned above, Mastodon do want to do it actually! But they hadn't read that post, I'm pretty sure.)

     Despite telling people to knob off in advance if they think it's a bad idea, several white man coders came into my mentions to tell me about how it would be better to just turn off notifications if you wanted to ignore future replies, etc. I blocked everyone, they all suck.

     So, an update on the "disable replies" feature request situation.

     First of all, @renchap says that GotoSocial are working on getting reply controls into ActivityPub, which is awesome! And Mastodon will be looking into adding it after quote-posts. So it *is* on the roadmap, it sounds like.

     And second, since I posted this 6 hours ago you all have added 77 thumbs-ups (what!!!!!!), and it's getting close to overtaking the feature request that's in the #1 spot!
