   The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants Thurs for #Israel PM Benjamin #Netanyahu & fmr defense minister Yoav #Gallant “for crimes against humanity & #WarCrimes” over Israel’s military ops in #Gaza.
   
The #ICC also issued a warrant for a #Hamas military leader, Mohammed #Deif, who was killed in an airstrike in Gaza in July…. Prosecutors issued warrants because they were not able to confirm whether he is dead or alive….

     The #ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, said he was seeking the arrest warrants in May, along w/those for snr #Hamas leaders. Although #Israel is not a party to the Rome Statute, upon which the court is founded, the warrants are a public rebuke of Israel’s conduct during the #war & are required to be enforced by the court’s 124 member states.

     In a statement, the court rejected #Israel’s challenge to its jurisdiction over “the situation in the State of Palestine” & over Israeli nationals. It said it found “reasonable grounds” to believe #Netanyahu & #Gallant bore responsibility for #crimes including the use of #starvation as a method of #war & for “murder, persecution, & other #inhumane acts.”

     The Israeli PM’s office said #Israel “categorically rejects the absurd & false accusations & actions directed against it” by the court. “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not succumb to pressure, will not be intimidated, & will not retreat until all the war objectives set by Israel at the outset of this campaign are achieved,” it said in a statement.
